At SafeASM, our mission is simple yet vital: to protect the lives and health of artisanal and small-scale miners through accessible, practical, and life-saving education. We believe that every miner deserves the right to work safely and return home healthy to their family. In the demanding and often hazardous environment of artisanal mining, knowledge is not just power, it is the most essential piece of Personal Protective Equipment.
Our Vision for the Future
We envision a future where artisanal mining is not synonymous with danger, but with safe, sustainable, and dignified work. We see a sector where miners are empowered with knowledge, where accidents are drastically reduced, and where health is protected for a long and productive career.
The Challenge We Address
Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) is a cornerstone of livelihoods in communities across Nigeria and beyond. However, it is fraught with severe occupational hazards, from dust-induced lung diseases and chemical exposure to preventable accidents and musculoskeletal injuries. Our research in Jos, Plateau State, revealed a critical gap: over 70% of miners have no access to formal safety training, leaving them vulnerable and unaware of the long-term health consequences of their work. This lack of knowledge perpetuates a cycle of risk, and injury.
